Scotland's internationally renowned golf course architect
|
James Braid was born and brought up just outside Elie in nearby Fife and designed, reconstructed or advised on more than 250 golf courses throughout the British Isles during his distinguished career.
Now VisitScotland in partnership with 30 Scottish golf courses have produced a series of six golf trails which explore the legacy of James Braid as one of golf's greatest course designers.
Two of these trails cover James Braid's courses in Perthshire and these are detailed below:
The Gleneagles Trail Gleneagles King's, Gleneagles Queen's, Taymouth Castle, Crieff Ferntower, Alloa.
The King's and Queen's courses at Gleneagles probably represent the pinnacle of achievement for James Briad the golf course architect. Both are superb heathland courses set in some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. Taymouth Castle, laid out by Braid in the early 1920's, is well known among discerning visitors to this beautiful setting at the east end of Loch Tay and Crieff presents a delightful challenge. Alloa or Schawpark as it is also known is a Braid redesign from the 1930's.
The Angus Golf Trail Edzell, Forfar, Alyth, Blairgowrie Rosemount, Downfield
Some of the finest inland golf in Scotland is to be found along this James Braid Trail. Edzell lies at the very gateway to the Highlands, enjoys a wonderful backdrop of mountains in an idyllic setting and is one of Scotland's hidden treasures. Old Tom Morris laid ou the first course at Forfar. The present layout is Braid's legacy from the 1920's and quite superb it remains to this day. At Alyth he designed extra holes to expand the course from 13 to 18 holes just before the Second World War, while at the famous Blairgowrie Club he reworked Alister MacKenzie's original design to create one of the great inland courses in the British Isles. Little remains of Braid's original design at Downfield but the present course is considered by Peter Thomson to be one of the most testing courses away from the seaside.
