Classic Scottish wildlife species

Perthshire is home to thousands of different species, from tiny insects to gigantic trees. All play a vital part in the great natural scheme. There are some creatures, however, that stand out as being especially beautiful, exciting, charismatic or mysterious. We yearn for contact with them and they enrich our increasingly sophisticated and stressful lives.

RED SQUIRREL

Perthshire is a stronghold for this endangered species and super acrobatic red squirrels can be seen gracing the woodlands throughout the year.

RED DEER

Large numbers of red deer roam wild in the Perthshire hills. There is deeply primal quality in the haunting sound of roaring stags…. or the sight of a herd moving effortlessly across remote country… the best things in life are free.

These elegant mammals are abundant in our woods and forests - they can often be spotted nibbling in the grassy clearings.

PINE MARTEN

What could be more exciting than a sighting of this shy hunter of the woods? Now protected against persecution, numbers are on the rise and martens are becoming bolder.

MOUNTAIN HARE

With broad feet that act like snowshoes, these delightful creatures are often encountered bounding athletically across high, heathery slopes in Perthshire.

CAPERCAILLIE

This massive woodland bird has a sharp beak and can fly through the forest at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Capercaillie are very vulnerable however, and difficult to see, but a small population thrives in Perthshire.

A majestic hunter that lives in high, mountain country. Perhaps the true symbol of the wild.

A re-introduction success story, with now over 147 breeding pairs in Scotland. Loch of the Lowes, near Dunkeld, is one of the best places to view these magnificent fish eating raptors.

Leaping salmon are a vision of tenacity and power and provide one of Scotland's most inspiring wildlife dramas.

PUFFINS

You definitely won't see puffins in Perthshire, however within easy day trip distance there are excellent marine cruise options enabling close encounters with this striking seabird.
