Perthshire - Where Gardens are a Way of Life

Perthshire enjoys a unique location along the fault line where the Scottish Lowlands meet the Highlands. This gives a wide variety of soil types and localised microclimates that are suitable for many different types of plants.

The area is known as Big Tree Country and features many famous trees including the Fortingall Yew, the oldest living thing in Europe, one of the tallest trees in Britain at the Hermitage near Birnam, and the highest hedge in the world at Meikleour. Perhaps it is these natural wonders that have provided inspiration for Perthshire’s pioneering gardening tradition that goes back several centuries.
Branklyn Garden, Perth
Perthshire’s 19th century plant collectors brought new species and specimens from all over the world. Foremost among them was David Douglas who introduced many of his finds to Scone Palace Gardens. Now the living story of these pioneers is being told at the Explorers Garden in Pitlochry.

At the National Trust for Scotland’s magical Branklyn Garden, you will find a wonderful, colourful collection of Asian and Alpine plants, known worldwide. One of Europe’s great plant collections can be enjoyed at Glendoick, whilst the University of Dundee Botanic Garden plays host to a range of exotic plants from around the world, and wild Himalayan delights await at Cluny House in the scenic Strathtay valley.
Perth in Bloom
Perthshire’s gardening traditions still continue throughout the local community in the Take a Pride in Perthshire campaigns that ensure towns and villages are ablaze with colour from spring to autumn. Perthshire has won countless national and international floral awards over the last decade. In 2008, Perth won the `Large Town/Small City` category in the RHS Britain in Bloom Floral Awards.

The Take a Pride in Perthshire Campaign extends across the length and breadth of Perth and Kinross. Local community groups, together with public and private sector partners, work collectively to improve the local environment, create a sense of civic pride and make a positive contribution to the quality of life in the area.

Beautiful Perth (previously Perth in Bloom) encompasses a range of activities that vary from creation of large floral feature flowerbeds and hanging basket displays to supporting the city's Eco Schools Programme and biodiversity schemes.
