Perth 800
Perth 800 is a year long celebration taking place during 2010 to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth by King William the Lion in 1210. The year-long celebration features a wide range of events across Perthshire.

Perth 800 Opening Weekend starts off the 2010 celebration with a weekend of activities. Off Kilter, a feisty and fabulous dance and music extravaganza showcases dance styles that are alive and kicking in Scotland today. The Market of Optimism will be in town offering you free money and a market of optimism to spend it in. However, if you’d prefer to delve into the past for a glimpse at the lives of ordinary people through extraordinary objects, then visit the Skin & Bone: Life & Death in Medieval Perth Exhibition.

Whether Perthshire evokes images of Perthshire Amber or T in the Park there are many musical delights with a difference in 2010. Perth Symphony Orchestra celebrate the musical legacy of rock legends ‘Queen’, when they perform Kashif’s Queen Symphony, whilst the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Amjad Ali Khan perform a dynamic fusion of Indian and Western music at the Home and Away: Samagaam Concert.

Photography or film, poetry or public art Perth 800 can offer it all. The renowned Perth Festival of the Arts guarantees three spectacular pieces of opera by the English Touring Opera, whilst Perth Concert Hall celebrates their 5th anniversary with world renowned Brazilian drummer Nana Vasconcelos leading a colourful carnival through Perth City.

Sport enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either. Park World Tour, a world cup in urban orienteering takes place in Perth City Centre and there is the Tay Descent, a new mass participation, canoeing and kayaking event. That’s not all, the first Geocaching Mega Event to take place in Scotland will see people participate in high-tech treasure hunting.

Looking at Perth’s heritage, Perth Day has been designated as a public day of commemoration and celebration to mark the 800th anniversary. Using Perth City as a venue Perthshire Past, Present and Future will be portrayed through a dramatised light trail at Lightnight Perth. Expect bright lights and big sings, concerts and choirs, talks and treasure hunts, discos and dance-a-thons.

Of course this is only a glimpse of what is on offer. Visit www.perth800.com for full details on the programme and future announcements.
