| Beethoven - A life in 8 chapters |
2 Feb - 8 Dec 2010
|
| Perth Concert Hall |
Perth |
7.30pm
|
|
| The piano sonata lies at the heart of Beethoven’s life’s work: the first was completed in 1795,
the last in 1822 – just five years before his death. Through these 32 pieces you can trace his
progress from brilliant young man to the unquestioned genius of his age. The sonatas hold
some of Beethoven's boldest, most profound and personal music.
In Llŷr Williams they find an ideal interpreter: a musician of deep insight, commanding presence
and formidable technique. Over the course of 2010 Williams will undertake the complete cycle
of Beethoven’s sonatas, beginning at the beginning and continuing (mostly) chronologically
through to the last works. "First Thoughts" - Tue 2 Feb: Sonatas No 1, No 2, No 3, No 19, No 20. "Sonatas of Youth" - Wed 3 Mar: Sonatas No 5, No 6, No 7, No 8 ‘Pathétique’. "The Middle Period" - Wed 14 Apr: Sonatas No4, No 9, No 10, No 11. "The Middle Period II" - Wed 12 May: Sonatas No 12, No 13, No 14 ‘Moonlight’,
No 15 ‘Pastoral’. "The Middle Period III" -
Sat 23 Oct: Sonatas No 16, No 17 ‘Tempest’, No 18,
No 21 ‘Waldstein’. "Late Beethoven" - Wed 10 Nov: Sonatas No 22, No 23 ‘Appassionata’, No 24,
No 25, No 26 ‘Les Adieux’. "Hammerklavier" - Wed 24 Nov: Sonatas No 27, No 28, No 29 ‘Hammerklavier’. "The Last 3 Sonatas" - Wed 8 Dec: Sonatas No 30, No 31, No 32. |

|
| Baltimore, 1948: after a string of flops, actor-manager Fred Graham desperately needs his new musical adaptation of The Taming Of The Shrew to be a hit. But while Fred’s opinion of his own talents is sky-high, he knows only one thing can guarantee success: a great, big star. Unfortunately, the only star Fred knows is Lilli Vanessi, legendary diva, Hollywood icon... and his ex-wife. As rehearsals progress, Lilli playing Kate opposite Fred’s Petruchio, each begins to remember, with a passion bordering on the homicidal, just why they got divorced in the first place... Meanwhile, Fred has fallen under the spell of nightclub singer Lois Lane, and has cast her, and her dancing partner, Bill, in the show. But chronic gambler Bill owes a fortune to some heavyweight mobsters. And to escape their clutches, Bill signs a $10,000 IOU – in Fred Graham’s name... On opening night, Fred sends Lois a fabulous bouquet – which mistakenly gets delivered to Lilli. Her heart melting, Lilli’s old feelings for Fred come flooding back... until she discovers that Lois was the intended recipient... just as two goons turn up to collect Bill’s debt – from Fred... Romantic, touching and hilariously funny, with a classic Cole Porter score, Kiss Me, Kate is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. Performed by a cast of brilliant actor-musicians, PFT’s flagship production for 2010 will provide unforgettable entertainment. Make a date with Kate! In repertoire until 16 October. |

|
| Looking for a recipe for disaster? Try this. Take one tired old sex farce called Nothing On. Add one group of volatile, ill-matched thespians; a perpetually put-upon Assistant Stage Manager; a sleep-deprived techie; and a director who knows a turkey when he sees it – and how to stuff it. Mix well, place on a set that defies the laws of physics, then send it out on a twelve week shoestring tour of some of Britain’s less salubrious theatrical venues... Disaster looms at the final dress rehearsal of Nothing On. Dotty can’t remember a word, Freddie’s not happy about his motivation and no one knows where the plates of sardines end up. It’s nearing midnight and they’re still only on Act 1. It can’t get any worse – can it? In a word: yes. One month on and the personal relationships backstage are threatening to cause even more havoc than the nightly shambles onstage. Managing two separate love triangles and dear old Selsdon’s dipsomania is stretching director Lloyd’s admittedly limited talents to breaking point. If they make it to the end of the show, it’ll be a miracle... And then, at the final, climactic performance, just when the cast thought their nightmare was about to end, every single thing that can go wrong, does – prompting a final, frantic, feverish attempt to put matters right... Noises Off is, quite simply, the funniest play you will ever see. Award-laden, with a five year run in the West End to its name, this brilliant, irresistible farce is a must-see this season! In repertoire until 16 October. |

|
| For acclaimed playwrights Sandor Turai and Alex Gal, their transatlantic journey from Cherbourg to New York should be plain sailing. Their new musical comedy is all but finished – there’s just the trivial matter of the ending to sort out - and their protégé, the brilliant young composer Adam Adam, is rapturously in love with their exotic leading lady, Natasha Navratilova. Four days’ sailing, a Broadway première, another smash hit: what could possibly go wrong? Well, they and Adam could decide to surprise Natasha by serenading her with their latest song from the show. And unexpectedly overhear her and fading matinée idol Ivor Fish whispering sweet nothings – and more – in the cabin next door. And Adam’s priceless score could end up in the Atlantic. With him threatening to follow suit... As both ship and show hit heavy weather, the line between reality and musical comedy becomes increasing blurred. Can Turai pull off a masterstroke and reunite Adam and Natasha? Will Gal ever stop eating long enough to help? Why does the ship’s crew seem to consist exclusively of would-be playwrights? And who, exactly, is Reggie Robinsod? Enter Dvornichek, an extraordinary cabin steward with an iron constitution. He may just be the only person who can sort it all out... Stoppard’s deliriously funny play is an affectionate tribute to the Golden Age of sophisticated comedy. With jokes that would have delighted Coward and songs that Irving Berlin might have penned, Rough Crossing is a feast of verbal wit, physical comedy and sheer theatrical virtuosity. In repertoire until 13 October. |

| A lot can happen in a single night... When a freak snowstorm blocks the highway west of Kansas City, the four passengers on the bus to Topeka are stranded at Grace’s restaurant. Nightclub ‘chanteuse’ Cherie is trying to escape the clutches of Bo Decker, the wild young cowboy who has all but kidnapped her, intending to take her back to Montana and marry her – regardless of what Cherie thinks about the idea. Virgil, Bo’s faithful ranch hand, has done his best to restrain his hot-headed young boss, but to no avail. Bo isn’t listening to anybody. Strangely, the fourth passenger, Dr. Lyman, a hard drinking academic with a passion for Shakespeare, appears considerably more interested in making sure the bus has crossed the state line than in its destination. Until, that is, he spies Elma, Grace’s wide-eyed, pretty, teenage waitress. Bus driver Carl is more than happy to stop over – he and Grace seem, well... friendly. And Will, the local sheriff, is on hand to keep an eye on this company of misfits. Good thing, too, what with Bo trying to romance Cherie like he’s roping a steer, and Dr. Lyman wanting to teach young Elma about the joys of true love. Come the morning, the snow has cleared and the bus can depart. But who will be on it? And where will they be headed? A wise, moving and often funny tale of the search for happiness in a lonely world, William Inge’s 1955 drama is a classic of modern American theatre. In repertoire until 14 October. |

|
| For Gertrude Chiltern, living by the highest moral standards is more important than anything: wealth, status – even love. She is fortunate, then, that her husband, Sir Robert, is the embodiment of her ideal: a junior Cabinet minister of growing influence, he enjoys a reputation for scrupulous honesty. But is that reputation entirely deserved? The notorious Mrs. Cheveley has good reason to think otherwise. And at a reception at the Chilterns’ London townhouse, Mrs. Cheveley confronts Sir Robert with damning evidence of a past misdeed; evidence which, if made public, would destroy his career – and his marriage – at a stoke. Even worse, the price for Mrs. Cheveley’s silence is not money, but a political favour that would require Sir Robert to ‘mislead’ the Government. In despair, Sir Robert turns for help to his friend, Lord Goring, a foppish socialite of some renown. Goring, it transpires, knows Mrs. Cheveley of old and has a plan to help Sir Robert. But Goring’s clever proposal has unexpected consequences. And he, Sir Robert and Gertrude have to engage in a complex and dangerous game with the vicious Mrs. Cheveley – a game in which the stakes could not be higher... Wilde’s dark, glittering comedy explores the risks inherent in a life lived in the public spotlight: must a politician be perfect? Is it right that anyone should be judged entirely by their past? In 1895, such questions caused a sensation; with new questions about political integrity now dominating our own age, this elegant, stylish work retains a surprisingly sharp contemporary resonance. In repertoire until 15 October. |
